We're live from our Transition Investment Summit in London where investing in nature is at the heart of our discussions. According to Morten Rossé, Head of Nature and Climate at holistiQ Investment Partners, Lombard Odier Investment Managers (LOIM), shifting from today’s carbon-intensive monoculture coffees to carbon-negative agroforestry alternatives can create better-tasting beans, benefits for nature and bigger margins for farmers. “Nature is not just worth investing in, it is investment ready,” he said. “Nature absorbs two-thirds of our emissions every year. If you value carbon at USD 150 per tonne, nature should be capitalised at the same size as the real-estate market. Markets are starting to see this value, and that’s why we believe this is the decade for nature.” Nature’s potential as a new asset class was explored further in a panel discussion moderated by Jasbir Nizar-Baker, UK CEO and Global Head of Business Development, LOIM. “New asset classes often go through the same journey and I think this is what we are going to see with nature,” said Taraneh Azad, Co-Head of holistiQ, LOIM. “Regenerating nature helps reduce emissions. It’s different from carbon offsetting, and it will become more and more necessary for corporate strategies.” This was echoed by Marc Palahí, Chief Nature Officer at holistiQ, LOIM. “We have to understand ecology to create a new economy,” he said. “Our markets are drowning in numbers but are struggling for wisdom. Biodiversity is the ultimate engine of the planet.
